National Cooperative Month

WHEREAS, cooperatives are user-owner run organizations that operate for the benefit of those using the services or products, and found in various industries, including electric, finance, food and farm; and

WHEREAS, cooperatives are based on an idea that workers in an industry achieve more together, and the modern cooperative system builds upon this principle; and

WHEREAS, our Commonwealth is home to an extensive network of different cooperatives with over 750,000 members; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Cooperative Council is dedicated to the success of cooperatives across the Commonwealth through educational programs open to the public, and especially young people; and

WHEREAS, the theme for National Cooperative Month—“Cooperatives Build”—reminds us that cooperatives are essential to building a new Virginia economy, through production of vital goods and services and employment of thousands of hard-working Virginians;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 2016 as COOPERATIVE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
