National Campus Safety Awareness Month

WHEREAS, every year, college students throughout the country become victims of stalking, sexual assault, robbery, homicide, and a host of other preventable crimes; and

WHEREAS, the law enforcement, mental health, student affairs, and legal professionals charged with assessing and managing these violent crimes at schools provide incredible service under unique and often challenging circumstances; and

WHEREAS, a safe campus and college community requires that university administrators, community leaders, and students work together to educate the public on the safety measures available; and

WHEREAS, while no campus community is immune from crimes, Virginians are committed to addressing these challenges and creating safer campus communities for all; and

WHEREAS, all victims of these crimes need to be supported by upholding an ongoing climate of support for them and by holding offenders accountable; and

WHEREAS, prevention education and bystander intervention play unique roles in maintaining safe communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 2015 as NATIONAL CAMPUS SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
