National Breastfeeding Awareness Month 2015


WHEREAS, the health and well-being of all Virginians is of utmost importance to the prosperity and livelihood of our Commonwealth’s families and communities; and

WHEREAS, World Breastfeeding Week, during Breastfeeding Awareness Month will take place August 1-7, to promote the theme of working women and breastfeeding; and

WHEREAS, exclusive breastfeeding of infants for the first six months of life promotes optimal physical growth, development, increased immunity and nutrition, and prevents a variety of acute and chronic diseases; and

WHEREAS, breastfeeding enriches the bonding process between mother and child, and provides women with health benefits such as reduced risk of ovarian, uterine, and breast cancers, osteoporosis and high blood pressure; and

WHEREAS, comprehensive lactation support programs increase employee retention rates, decrease absenteeism, decrease healthcare costs, improve employee productivity, and promote a family-friendly atmosphere in the workplace and in the community; and

WHEREAS, all Virginia employers are encouraged to accommodate the breastfeeding needs of mothers and their children; and

WHEREAS, on a global scale, keeping breastfeeding high on the public health agenda is critical in improving the health and well-being of mothers and babies;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize August 2015 as NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
