National Bike Month 2016


WHEREAS, across the world, bicycling is used for transportation, recreation, fitness, and fun; and

WHEREAS, bicycling is an efficient form of transportation and offers independent mobility for many Virginians traveling between work, school, and home; and

WHEREAS, the use of bicycles for transportation benefits all residents of Virginia, by easing traffic congestion and minimizing air pollution; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth, through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School Program, has awarded more than $23 million to 550 middle and elementary schools for programs that encourage students to bicycle and walk to school; and

WHEREAS, bicycling offers a unique perspective from which residents and visitors can discover Virginia’s natural beauty, history, and culture; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth contains 838 miles of the U.S. Numbered Bicycle Route System; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is fortunate to have hosted the 2015 World Road Cycling Championships with more than 1,000 athletes from 76 countries as well as 645,000 on-site spectators from around the world and showcasing the beauty of our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, many recreational, charitable, and competitive bicycling events are held in the Commonwealth and contribute to Virginia’s economy; and

WHEREAS, Bike Month increases public awareness of the benefits of bicycling, bicycle safety, and organized activities such as Bike-to-Work events, club rides, and family rides;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 2016 as NATIONAL BIKE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
