Month of the Military Child 2015


WHEREAS, thousands of brave Americans demonstrate their courage and commitment to freedom by serving in the Armed Forces of the United States both on Active Duty and in the National Guard and Reserves; and

WHEREAS, there are approximately 250,000 children (of whom 75,000 are school-aged) with parents serving the military stationed in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Virginia has one of the highest numbers of military school-age children in the nation and is committed to being an active participant in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children which facilitates military children transitioning in school systems across state lines; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is partnering with the U.S. Department of Defense to increase access to affordable, quality childcare for military children; and

WHEREAS, the youth of our service members continue to make significant contributions to family, schools, communities, the nation and our Commonwealth, despite prolonged and repeated absences of one or both parents; and

WHEREAS, these children are a source of pride and honor to us all, and it is only fitting that we take the time to recognize their contributions, celebrate their spirit, and let our men and women in uniform know that while they are taking care of us, we are taking care of their children; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting that the Hampton Military Affairs Committee, and the Military Newspapers of Virginia, working in conjunction with the Hampton City Public Schools, and various military organizations,  and local business will conduct the 3rd Annual Celebration of Little Heroes/Military Child in the Hampton Roads Convention Center on Saturday, April 4th; and

WHEREAS, the recognition of the "Month of the Military Child” allows us to pay tribute to military children for their commitment, patience, courage and unconditional support of their parents;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize April 2015 as Month of the Military Child in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
