Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2016


WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of brave Americans demonstrate their courage and dedication to freedom by serving in the Armed Forces of the United States on Active Duty or in the National Guard and Reserves, and many of these men and women are married with a dedicated spouse; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is home to more than 178,000 dependents and an estimated 68,000 spouses of active duty military personnel; and,

WHEREAS, military spouses are strong, supportive, and resilient and are devoted to their family and country; and

WHEREAS, sixty-eight percent of military spouses volunteer in local communities and on military installations; and

WHEREAS, military spouses continue to make significant contributions to family, schools, communities, the Commonwealth, and the nation despite prolonged and repeated absences of service members; and

WHEREAS, Military Spouse Appreciation Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the unyielding love and support of military spouses, and honor their many sacrifices for our country;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 6, 2016, as MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
