Military Appreciation Month 2016


WHEREAS, members of the United States Armed Forces defend citizens’ rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and protect us from harm at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS, providing services and opportunities for military families and their children is a top priority of the McAuliffe Administration; and

WHEREAS, Virginians have a proud history of service in the United States Armed Forces in times of peace and war; and

WHEREAS, many Virginians continue to serve on active duty, in the National Guard, and in the reserve components of the United States Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, nearly 800,000 veterans currently reside in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in November 2015, the Commonwealth of Virginia was certified by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as the first state in the nation to functionally end veteran homelessness; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Virginia wish to recognize and honor all members of the United States Armed Forces, past and present, as well as their families for their service and sacrifice;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 2016 as MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
