Live Positively Fitness Month


WHEREAS, childhood obesity affects more than 23 million children and teenagers in the United States, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 young people as overweight or obese; and

WHEREAS, childhood obesity puts children at risk for developing health problems that will last well into their adult life such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other serious medical issues; and

WHEREAS, a lack of physical activity contributes to childhood obesity and chronic diseases; and

WHEREAS, Virginia has joined with the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils in an effort to decrease childhood obesity and save lives; and

WHEREAS, Chairman Jake Steinfeld and the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils is supporting Virginia schools with the tools necessary to promote physical activity and wellness; and

WHEREAS, academics and fitness go hand in hand in ensuring that the Commonwealth’s children are well educated and healthy; and

WHEREAS, Virginia celebrates Live Positively Fitness Month in October to bring greater awareness to the importance of physical fitness and wellness in the fight against childhood obesity; and

WHEREAS, Live Positively Fitness Month is an opportunity for parents, teachers, schools, and community leaders to come together to educate Virginians on the impact that childhood obesity has and the importance of encouraging children and families to get physically fit;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 2014 as LIVE POSITIVELY FITNESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
