Kinship Care Month


WHEREAS, over 170,000 children in Virginia are being raised by grandparents, aunts, uncles, or other relatives who are not their parent; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth believes that children have the best opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive when they are raised in families on a permanent basis; and

WHEREAS, Virginia values the resources available within extended family networks, and is committed to seeking them out and providing them to all Virginia children; and

WHEREAS, relationships with family are crucial for children and adults, and it is our responsibility to promote and preserve kinship, sibling, and other familial connections for children in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Kinship Care Month recognizes the depth of familial love and responsibility, and reflects the core values of family, community, and the welfare of children shared by all citizens of the Commonwealth and the United States;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 2016, as KINSHIP CARE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
