Irish Heritage Month 2016

WHEREAS, from the founding of the Commonwealth to the present day, people of Irish heritage have long enjoyed a rich and proud history in Virginia including their many contributions to religion, charity, education, literature, government and military service; and

WHEREASIrish-born and Irish-American colonists fought for our independence during the American Revolution, and our nation's founding documents include the signatures of many Americans of Irish heritage; and

WHEREAS, in the 19th century, millions of Irish people, left behind the poverty, famine and political oppression in their native land to emigrate to America; and

WHEREAS, March is the month when Irish Americans traditionally celebrate their ties to Ireland with music, festivals and parades;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize March 2016 as IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
