WHEREAS, the occurrence of any type of crime in Virginia severely diminishes the quality of life for all of the citizens of our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, insurance fraud is ranked second behind tax evasion as the most common and costly financially motivated nonviolent crime, and all Virginians pay for this crime through increased costs of goods and services and higher insurance premiums; and

WHEREAS, the Insurance Fraud Program of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was established January 1, 1999, through legislation approved by the General Assembly, and its efforts since 1999 have resulted in 2,828 arrests for insurance fraud and related crimes; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Insurance Fraud Program is to curb the growing practice of insurance fraud in Virginia by increasing public awareness, giving fraud investigators specialized training, and encouraging Virginians to report occurrences of insurance fraud to the Insurance Fraud Hotline and the Stamp Out Fraud website; and

WHEREAS, Insurance Fraud Awareness Week is designed to raise community awareness of insurance fraud occurrences, to create more widespread public knowledge of the Insurance Fraud Program and its purpose, and to educate Virginians to take responsibility in the prevention and reporting of insurance fraud;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize the week of May 11-17, 2014, as INSURANCE FRAUD AWARENESS WEEK in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
