Insurance Fraud Awareness Week 2016


WHEREAS, the law-abiding citizens of our great Commonwealth and nation deserve the opportunity to live in safety and to lead peaceful and productive lives; and

WHEREAS, the occurrence of any type of crime in Virginia severely diminishes the quality of life for all citizens of our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, insurance fraud is ranked second behind tax evasion as the most common and costly corporate crime, and all Virginians pay for this crime through increased costs of goods and services, and higher insurance premiums; and

WHEREAS, the Insurance Fraud Program of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was established January 1, 1999, through legislation approved by the Virginia General Assembly, and the fraud program’s efforts since 1999 have resulted in more than 3,300 arrests for insurance fraud and related crimes; and more than $18 million of ordered restitution; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Insurance Fraud Program is to curb instances of insurance fraud in Virginia by increasing public awareness, giving fraud investigators specialized training, and encouraging Virginians to report occurrences of insurance fraud to the Insurance Fraud Hotline and the Stamp Out Fraud website; and

WHEREAS, Insurance Fraud Awareness Week is designed to raise community awareness of insurance fraud, to create more widespread public knowledge of the Insurance Fraud Program and its purpose, and to educate Virginians to take responsibility in the prevention and reporting of insurance fraud;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize April 24-30, 2016, as INSURANCE FRAUD AWARENESS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
