In Honor of Albert Doumar


WHEREAS, since 1946 Mr. Albert Doumar owned Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue in Norfolk, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue originally opened in 1904, and is one of Virginia’s most cherished cultural and culinary landmarks; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Doumar operated the world’s first ice cream cone machine, which was first invented by his uncle Abe Doumar at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, and is still in use today at Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue; and

WHEREAS, in 1999 Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue received an award from the James Beard Foundation as one of the nation’s premier family-owned restaurants as one of “America’s Classics”; and

WHEREAS, Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue was recognized as the best ice cream cone purveyor in the United States by Gourmet Magazine in 2002; and

WHEREAS, prior to his work at Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue, Mr. Doumar served our nation in the United States Navy, and fought bravely to defend our country in World War II; and 

WHEREAS, Mr. Doumar promoted tourism in Virginia, welcomed candidates for elected office to his restaurant, and always worked to serve every customer who visited Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue; and

WHEREAS, hisoutstanding work served the Norfolk community and strengthened the Commonwealth of Virginia;  

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize Albert Doumar for his distinguished service to the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
