Immigrant Heritage Month

WHEREAS, America is a nation founded and built by immigrants; and

WHEREAS, the entrepreneurial drive and spirit of our country is fueled by the unique origins of all Americans; and

WHEREAS, immigrants are an important part of Virginia’s history and continue to keep our workforce competitive, our businesses on the cutting edge, and our economy strong; and

WHEREAS, today, immigrants make up fifteen percent of the Commonwealth’s workforce; and

WHEREAS, the top five countries of birth for the current foreign-born population of Virginia include El Salvador, India, Mexico, the Philippines, and Korea; and

WHEREAS, immigration enhances Virginia’s cultural diversity, as foreign-born individuals add to the variety of languages, customs, and cuisines enjoyed in the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 2014 as IMMIGRATION HERITAGE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
