Hot Dog Day


WHEREAS, hot dogs have been one of America’s favorite foods since their introduction to the United States in 1871 at a Coney Island, New York, hot dog stand; and

WHEREAS, in 2013, American consumers spent approximately $2.5 billion on hot dogs in retail stores, representing sales of more than one billion packages of hot dogs nationwide; and

WHEREAS, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that Americans consume more than 20 billion hot dogs annually, as seen by their estimation that hot dogs are served in 95% of American households; and

WHEREAS, from small business owners and street vendors to supermarkets, fairs, and stadiums, hot dog sales contribute greatly to the economy of both the United States and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day traditionally constitute the “hot dog season” during which 38% of annual hot dog sales occur, representing revenues of $614 million and an approximate consumption of more than seven billion hot dogs across the country; and

WHEREAS, ten percent of all annual hot dog sales occur during the month of July, which is designated as National Hot Dog Month;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize July 23, 2014,as HOT DOG DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all citizens.
