Geography Awareness Month


WHEREAS, the people of Virginia recognize the vital role that geography education plays in the success of all students; and

WHEREAS, geography helps us understand how people and places interact, and the nature of an increasingly globalized economy; and 

WHEREAS, geography is an essential part of a 21st century education, and geographically-literate workers are critical to building a new Virginia economy; and

WHEREAS, National Geographic and a coalition of major national partners lead campaigns to increase geographic learning at home, in school, and in the community; and

WHEREAS, since 1987, the National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 16-22, 2014, as GEOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
