Food Day

WHEREAS, improving access to fresh, local agricultural products is one effective strategy for healthier communities; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s 11.8% food insecurity rate means that more than 900,000 Virginians do not know the source of their next meal; and

WHEREAS, expanding access to fresh, healthy food is of importance to low income communities in “food deserts”; and

WHEREAS, though obesity rates have dropped in most regions of Virginia, greater access to healthy foods is still critical to improved health; and

WHEREAS, Food Day recognizes the need to support healthy, affordable, and sustainable food, and celebrates the efforts of healthcare providers and individuals promoting healthy lifestyles through healthy food;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 24, 2015, as FOOD DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
