Fibromyalgia Awareness Day 2016

WHEREAS, fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that inflicts widespread body pain on millions of women, men, and children of all backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, in addition to chronic pain, fibromyalgia’s symptoms include moderate to severe fatigue, sleep disorders, problems with cognitive functioning, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, migraines, anxiety, depression, and environmental sensitivities; and

WHEREAS, the disorder is often seen in families, among siblings, or in mothers and their children; and

WHEREAS, it is important to raise awareness among researchers, doctors, and the general public regarding fibromyalgia as there is no known cause or cure for the disorder and it takes an average of five years for a patient to be diagnosed; and

WHEREAS, increased focus on fibromyalgia will allow our Commonwealth to better support citizens struggling with the challenges of this chronic pain disorder;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 12, 2016, as FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
