Family and Consumer Sciences Week 2016


WHEREAS, Family and Consumer Sciences, previously known as Home Economics, is an academic discipline that combines aspects of social and natural science; and

WHEREAS, established in 1909 within the Industrial Arts Department of the Virginia Education Association, the Virginia Home Economics Association (VHEA), today known as the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (VAFCS), is an organization dedicated to the teachings of family and consumer sciences; and

WHEREAS, VAFCS empowers members to act on public concerns, focus their expertise on critical issues, and collaborate with partners at organizations with shared purpose; and

WHEREAS, the practices of family and consumer sciences seeks to improve the quality of life for individuals and families within a community by assisting decision makers at all levels in making sound choices that result in healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives; and

WHEREAS, family and consumer science education provides research-based practical knowledge regarding everyday life, including development, personal behavior, housing,  the environment, food, nutrition, health, apparel, textiles, and the management of resources and personal finances; and

WHEREAS, VAFCS is dedicated to providing resources to achieve an optimal quality of life and to working with individuals throughout the Commonwealth to help them make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, and providing resources to achieve an optimal quality of life;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize February 14-20, 2016, as FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
