Exceptional Children's Week


WHEREAS, the most precious and vulnerable of Virginia's citizens are infants, toddlers, and young children who have or are at risk for developmental delays and disabilities; and

WHEREAS, across the Commonwealth there are more than 24,000 infants, toddlers, and young children with identified disabilities being served in a range of settings such as family, public, and private day care and early childhood programs; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children supports individuals who work with infants, toddlers, and young children with developmental delays and other disabilities by promoting collaborative partnerships, encouraging research and innovation, and spreading awareness of current issues influencing early childhood special education; and

WHEREAS, families across the Commonwealth will have options to choose from quality rated early childhood programs because of such collaborative partnerships; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Early Childhood seeks to promote and recognize the work of early childhood special educators, related service providers, paraeducators, and families of infants and young children with disabilities and the meaningful activities of all its members through the establishment of "Virginia's Exceptional Children's Week"; and

WHEREAS, during the second week of May Virginia celebrates Exceptional Children’s Week, through awareness activities and celebrations that honor teachers, families, administrators, and anyone supporting individuals with special needs;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 10-16, 2015, as EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN’S WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
