Electrical Safety Month 2016


WHEREAS, National Electrical Safety Month is observed each May to educate citizens about the steps to prevent electrically-related fires, fatalities, injuries, and property loss; and

WHEREAS, more than $1.5 billion is lost annually to property damage from home fires caused by electrical distribution, appliances and equipment, and heating and air conditioning systems; and

WHEREAS, following basic electrical safety precautions can help prevent injury and death; and

WHEREAS, Virginians are encouraged to check their home and workplace for possible electrical hazards; and

WHEREAS, citizens are encouraged to test their smoke detectors and ground fault circuit interrupters monthly and after every major electrical storm; and

WHEREAS, for more than 80 years, the Virginia Chapter of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors has actively provided safety checklists, tips, and information to the Commonwealth to help ensure the safety of homes and businesses; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 2016 as ELECTRICAL SAFETY MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
