Electric Utility Linemen Day 2016


WHEREAS, Virginia’s electric utilities have a long history of responsible and reliable service to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, investor-owned utilities began operating in Virginia as early as 1888 and provided the first electricity to Virginia consumers in 1909; and

WHEREAS, in the 1930s, electricity made its way into the farms, homes, towns, and villages of rural America and the Commonwealth, thanks to the creation of Rural Electric Cooperatives; and

WHEREAS, municipal utilities also provide reliable, cost-effective local electric service to the residents of several Virginia cities and towns; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s electric utilities employ electric linemen who are responsible for building and maintaining the distribution lines that bring electricity to customers’ homes and businesses; and

WHEREAS, electric utility linemen consistently serve Virginians by providing reliable, affordable electricity, by installing electric service, repairing damage after storms, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s electric utility linemen deserve the Commonwealth’s respect, admiration, and appreciation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 4, 2016, as ELECTRIC UTILITY LINEMEN DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
