Drive Safer Sunday


WHEREAS, each year, thousands of individuals lose their lives in traffic crashes; and

WHEREAS, many of these fatal car crashes could have been avoided by drivers exercising greater patience, caution, and awareness; and

WHEREAS, drivers should prepare for the unpredictable behaviors of other drivers, disabled vehicles, spilled cargo, adverse weather, and other potential dangers on roadways; and

WHEREAS, remaining focused allows motorists to react quickly and correctly in any situation; and

WHEREAS, drivers should focus on driving, eliminate distractions, maintain safe speeds and drive defensively to avoid preventable accidents; and

WHEREAS, many individuals and organizations in Virginia work to increase awareness of the need for driver safety; and

WHEREAS, the Sunday after the Thanksgiving holiday is traditionally one of the busiest highway travel days of the year; and

WHEREAS, the United States Senate proclaimed the Sunday following Thanksgiving as Drive Safer Sunday, to remind holiday drivers to be alert;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 26, 2017, as DRIVE SAFER SUNDAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
