Diwali 2014


WHEREAS, Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is an ancient holiday celebrated in autumn of each year by a variety of communities throughout Virginia and across the globe; and

WHEREAS, Diwali is celebrated by dispelling darkness and bringing light into life with traditional offerings, rituals, and festivals, including the display of symbols of victory and good over evil; and

WHEREAS, traditions of Diwali include gathering together with friends and family for community prayer, exchanging gifts, joyful dancing, setting off firecrackers, and decorating houses with colorful rangolis; and

WHEREAS, those celebrating Diwali often leave small clay oil lamps (diyas) near their homes and shops to display light; and  

WHEREAS, this year’s celebration of lights falls on October 23–27, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Virginia joins with all those around the world celebrating Diwali;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 23–27, 2014, as DIWALI 2014 in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
