Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week


WHEREAS, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the primary providers of publicly-funded long-term support and service for millions of people with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, DPSs help with the meals, medications, bathing, dressing, and mobility needs of those they serve; and

WHEREAS, DSPs improve their clients’ quality of life by developing strong relationships with them, their families, and their communities; and

WHEREAS, DSPs are the bridge to community living for people with disabilities, offering support and services that promote independence and inclusion; and

WHEREAS, by 2020, an estimated 1.2 million DSPs will be needed to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, DSPs deserve recognition for their hard work and the positive impact they have in communities throughout Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 7-13, 2014, as DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS RECOGNITION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
