Diabetes Awareness Month

WHEREAS, more than 29 million Americans have diabetes, and another 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes; and 

WHEREAS, type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes, affects 5% of all diabetes patients and is characterized as an insulin deficiency, when the body does not produce the insulin needed to provide energy to the body; and

WHEEREAS, type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is characterized by a rising blood glucose (sugar) level in the body, resulting in the body’s misuse of insulin properly over time; and

WHEREAS, known as diabetes during pregnancy, gestational diabetes increases an individual’s likelihood of getting diabetes during one’s lifetime by 50%; and   

WHEREAS, the seriousness of  diabetes is often underestimated due to the fact that diabetes is rarely listed as a cause of death, but rather the complications caused by diabetes are listed instead; and

WHEREAS, diabetes can lead to increased risk for heart attack or stroke, kidney failure, amputations, and advanced diabetic retinopathy, greatly increasing the risk of severe vision loss, as well as nerve damage; and

WHEREAS, a healthy lifestyle is important for individuals with diabetes and includes exercising, not smoking, and maintaining a balanced diet and proper insulin levels; and

WHEREAS, according to 2013 Virginia Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, 631,194 Virginians, or 9.8% of adults 18 and older, had diabetes; and

WHEREAS, this year’s theme for Diabetes Awareness Month is America Gets Cooking to Stop Diabetes; and

WHEREAS, the American Diabetes Association is promoting the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes on November 2, 2014, in Fairfax, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Diabetes Awareness Month is an opportunity to increase awareness of diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle in diabetes prevention and care;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 2014 as DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
