Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month


WHEREAS, all Virginians have the right to participate fully and equally in society and to contribute to the economy; and

WHEREAS, nearly 150,000 adults and children in Virginia have developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Virginians with and without disabilities share common ground and have the right to work, play, learn, and grow together; and

WHEREAS, Virginians with developmental disabilities contribute significantly to our schools, families, faith communities, and workforce; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to the process of transitioning to a community-based system of support for individuals with developmental disabilities and is redesigning critical programs and services to promote inclusion and community integration; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth believes that Virginians with developmental disabilities have the right to make their own decisions, live where and with whomever they choose, and receive the support they need to be successful, productive and as independent as possible, and

WHEREAS, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is an appropriate time to recognize the Commonwealth’s efforts to achieve a culture of meaningful and full inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life and to set forth its commitment to identify barriers and develop solutions; and

WHEREAS, recognizing the abilities and contributions of people with developmental disabilities enriches our Commonwealth and signifies our commitment to equal opportunity, equal access and equal rights for individuals with disabilities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize March 2014 as DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
