Day of Gleaning 2015

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to combating hunger in every part of the state, and providing aid to Virginians in need; and

WHEREAS, each year, nearly one million Virginians experience food insecurity, turning to food banks across the Commonwealth for a balanced meal; and

WHEREAS, from the fields to market tables, the United States wastes much edible, unclaimed farm crops that are nutritional in value but are not sold because they do not meet aesthetic requirements or because of incomplete harvesting; and

WHEREAS, it is important to recognize that the best of these crops can be collected and used to feed the hungry; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is seeking innovative ways to minimize hunger; and

WHEREAS, gleaning, the process of gathering fruits and vegetables left by harvesters, is aimed at making healthy, organic produce available for all, and is a safe and healthy practice to salvage unclaimed food; and

WHEREAS, farmers and packing houses with excess food are encouraged to participate in the Fourth Annual Commonwealth Day of Gleaning, and support the salvaging of food for the hungry;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize August 20, 2015, as DAY OF GLEANING in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
