Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Day and Month

WHEREAS, approximately one in every 2,500 newborns are affected by congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH); and

WHEREAS, CDH is characterized by abnormal development of the diaphragm before birth, which leads to defects ranging from a thinned area in the diaphragm to its complete absence; and

WHEREAS, those with CDH often endure multiple surgeries and possible medical complications beyond their diagnosis including heart defects, pulmonary complications, gastric and intestinal problems, and developmental delays, at times requiring long term respiratory and medicinal support; and

WHEREAS, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Day and Month is an opportunity to stand with the children and families of those suffering with CDH, to honor those who have lost their lives to CDH, and to recognize those who have survived CDH, and to advocate for urgently needed medical research and advances;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize March 31, 2015, as CONGENITAL DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA AWARENESS DAY and April 2015 as CONGENITAL DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
