Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War


WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia joins the federal government, local, city, and county governments, private organizations, and communities in observing the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War – a commemorative 13 year program to honor those who served our country; and

WHEREAS, Virginia pays tribute to the 3,009,000 Americans who served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, and the 58,260 who gave their lives; and

WHEREAS, of the names inscribed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., there are 1,307 Virginians listed who made the ultimate sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, our nation draws inspiration and strength from the heroes who suffered as prisoners of war, and all those who were wounded and still carry the scars of war, both seen and unseen; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia renews its commitment to those who answered the country’s call to service in Vietnam, and their families;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 28, 2012, through November 11, 2025, as the COMMEMORATION OF THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIETNAM WAR in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, in accordance with the national period of observance, and I call this observance to the attention of all citizens.
