Cochlear Implant Awareness 2016


WHEREAS, currently one in eight Americans has hearing loss, and an estimated 79,940 Virginians report having a hearing disability; and

WHEREAS, cochlear implants are small, complex electronic devices that directly stimulate the auditory nerve, providing a sense of sound to people with hearing loss; and

WHEREAS, cochlear implant technology has allowed over 30,000 children and 50,000 adults in the United States to hear; and

WHEREAS, only seven percent of those who qualify for a cochlear implant use one to hear; and

WHEREAS, Cochlear Implant Awareness Week is an opportunity to educate parents of children with hearing disabilities about this life-changing technology; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to raising public awareness about the need for prevention, treatment, and regular hearing screenings throughout life;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize July 31-August 6, 2016, as COCHLEAR IMPLANT AWARENESS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
