Building Safety Month 2016


WHEREAS, safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of citizens is paramount to all building safety professionals in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, protecting the Commonwealth’s buildings is the responsibility of building safety professionals who work to ensure our buildings are affordable and safe to occupy; and

WHEREAS, Virginia building safety professionals create and influence our built environment through the consensus development and implementation of the highest quality codes; and

WHEREAS, our Commonwealth’s continuing efforts to embrace emerging opportunities for integrating sustainability, energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, and enhanced resilience into the construction process gives us confidence that structures throughout the Commonwealth are durable, reliable, and ready for the future; and

WHEREAS, Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council and promoted statewide by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development and Virginia Department of Fire Programs to remind the public about the critical role of our Commonwealth’s first preventers and Building Safety Professionals; and

WHEREAS, the theme for Building Safety Month, “Driving Growth through Innovation, Resilience, and Safety,” encourages all Virginians to enhance economic opportunity and celebrate the importance of building and fire safety regulations; mitigating disaster; integrating new and innovative technologies into the construction industry; and driving economic growth through safe, adaptive new building design; and

WHEREAS, in observance of Building Safety Month, Virginians should consider home and community improvement projects that promote safety and sustainability and acknowledge the essential services provided by Virginia’s building safety community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe do hereby recognize May 2016 as BUILDING SAFETY MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.
