Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Month


WHEREAS, running, walking, and bicycling are inexpensive, healthy, efficient, and sustainable forms of transportation; and

WHEREAS, bicyclists, motorists, and pedestrians have mutual rights and responsibilities while traveling on the roadways of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to wear reflective clothing while moving againsttraffic; and

WHEREAS, motorists are urged to drive distraction free so that they may safely share the road with bicyclists, pedestrians, and other motorists; and

WHEREAS, in 2013, 86 people died walking or cycling on our Virginia roadways, and an additional 716 bicyclists and 1,765 pedestrians were injured; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia will host an estimated 450,000 spectators, 1,000 athletes for the 2015 Union Cycliste Internationale World Road Cycling Championships; and

WHEREAS, this initiative will bring together hundreds of partners including cities and counties, businesses, local organizations, schools, and sporting groups from across the Commonwealth for the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of sharing the road in order to reduce the number of crashes and injuries; and

WHEREAS, Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Month is an opportunity to recognize the importance of safety for all individuals traveling on the roadways and promote bicycling and walking as healthy, efficient, and sustainable forms of transportation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 2014 as BICYCLIST AND PEDESTRIAN AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
