Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

WHEREAS, the growing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in Virginia, comprised of  many unique cultures, ethnicities, and religions, has played an essential role in shaping and advancing the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, AAPI men and women contribute to all areas of life in Virginia –– including government, business, arts and sciences, medicine, law enforcement, and the military; and

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the hundreds of thousands of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Virginia, whose abilities and contributions strengthen Virginia’s economy, enrich Virginia’s diverse culture, and invigorate Virginia’s communities; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is committed to a comprehensive effort to support Virginia’s AAPI community –– including defending voting rights, ensuring that Virginia is welcoming to all people, maintaining a world class public education system, and building a more diverse economy that creates broad-based prosperity;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 2015 as ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
