American Eagle Day 2015

WHEREAS, the Bald Eagle was designated as the National Emblem of the United States on June 20, 1782, by our country’s Founding Fathers at the Second Continental Congress; and

WHEREAS, the Bald Eagle is unique to North America and represents the attribute of freedom; and

WHEREAS, the Bald Eagle is used in the Great Seal of the United States and in the logos of other government agencies, including the Presidency, Congress, Defense Department, Treasury Department, Justice Department, State Department, and the Department of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Interior and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the Bald Eagle from the Endangered Species Act protection in 2007, but the Bald Eagle continues to be protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 20, 2015, as AMERICAN EAGLE DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
