Adoption Awareness Month


WHEREAS, every child in Virginia, regardless of physical, medical or emotional challenges, age or race, needs a place to call home; and

WHEREAS, family is the most important resource for providing children with the love, dignity, and opportunity needed to succeed; and

WHEREAS, every child deserves the security and comfort of growing up in a family environment; and

WHEREAS, there are more than 4,000 children and youth in foster care in our Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, 40 foster children become available for adoption every month; and

WHEREAS, the 2013 General Assembly approved $1.5 million to connect loving families with eligible foster children and provide post-adoption services to these families; and

WHEREAS, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute is a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness about the needs of children without families; and

WHEREAS, the “Virginia Adopts: Campaign for 1000,” has increased awareness of adoption, and has resulted in more than 800 children adoptions or matched permanent families for children in Virginia;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 2014 as ADOPTION AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
