90th Anniversary of United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg

WHEREAS, in 1911, a group of concerned Virginians met to discuss how to better meet the education and health needs of their community; and

WHEREAS, this meeting led to the formation in 1924 of the Richmond Community Chest campaign, which created  United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg; and

WHEREAS, for more than 90 years, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg has brought the community together to help those most in need; and

WHEREAS, United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg strives to mobilize people, multiply investments, and maximize opportunities so that people learn more, earn more, and lead safe and healthy lives; and

WHEREAS, United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg serves the counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, and Powhatan, and the cities of Colonial Heights, Petersburg, and Richmond; and

WHEREAS, United Way gives local residents the opportunity to participate in charitable giving, to actively support an idea or cause through advocacy, and to volunteer their time to improve the community; and

WHEREAS, the fiscal year July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015, marks the 90th year that United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg has been awarding grants to organizations that help people in the greater Richmond and Petersburg area;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize the fiscal year July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015, as the 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF UNITED WAY OF GREATER RICHMOND & PETERSBURG in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
