39th Marine Corps Marathon Day


WHEREAS, the 39th Marine Corps Marathon will be celebrated on Sunday, October 26, 2014, in Arlington, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, thirty thousand runners from every state and 50 nations are registered to run in the event, which culminates at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Rosslyn, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Marine Corps Marathon, known as “The People’s Marathon,”embodies the camaraderie and indomitable spirit of the men and women in our nation’s Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, hosted by the United States Marine Corps, the event promotes physical fitness and community goodwill while showcasing the superior organizational skills of U.S. Marines; and

WHEREAS, the scenic 26.2 mile course will begin in Arlington, Virginia, between Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon, and include many Northern Virginia landmarks; and

WHEREAS, Marines inspire lasting community and global impact through exemplary conduct at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS, Marine Corps Marathon Day is an opportunity to honor the great sacrifices made by Marines, and all armed service members, and to recognize the essential role they play in ensuring our safety and freedom;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 26, 2014, as the MARINE CORPS MARATHON DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
