379th Birthday of the United States National Guard


WHEREAS; on this day December 13, 1636, the National Guard was created as the National Militia; and

WHEREAS; the name was officially changed to the United States National Guard in 1916 during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson; and

WHEREAS; the National Guard has been in every major conflict that the inhabitants of our country have fought in for almost 400 years; and

WHEREAS; the brave members of the National Guard have sacrificed to protect our great nation both at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS; it is requested that all Virginians take the time to honor and celebrate their fellow citizens who have sacrificed and fought to protect the freedom of our nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize December 13, 2015, asthe 379th BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL GUARD in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
