225th Birthday of the United States Coast Guard


WHEREAS; on August 4, 1790, the Coast Guard was created by Alexander Hamilton and the leadership from our newly formed United States congress; and

WHEREAS; in 1915 the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Lifesaving Service by congressional action; and

WHEREAS; with a fleet of more than 100 boats and 13 cutters in the commonwealth, the United States Coast Guard provides service in multiple ways including preventing crime, facilitating commerce activity, and conducting rescue missions; and

WHEREAS; the Coast Guard is a presence in the local, regional, national, and global community, and today we recognize those that sacrifice to keep our country safe; and

WHEREAS; today we honor those that have served in the United States Coast Guard which is a unique branch of the military that serves as a maritime law enforcement agency and a federal regulatory agency; and

WHEREAS; the Commonwealth is proud to be home to over 9,500 Active Duty Coast Guard members and their families on six installations that employ over 1,500 civilian employees;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize August 4, 2015, asthe 225th BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
