20th Anniversary of AmeriCorps


WHEREAS, since 1994, more than 14,000 Virginia residents have served more than 22 million hours in the national service; and

WHEREAS, more than 6,400 AmeriCorps members of all ages and backgrounds serve in more than 930 locations in Virginia, bolstering the civic, neighborhood, and faith-based organizations that are so vital to our economic and social well-being; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members address the most pressing challenges facing our nation, from educating students for jobs of the 21st century and supporting veterans and military families to providing health services and helping communities recover from natural disasters; and

WHEREAS, the national service through AmeriCorps creates more sustainable, resilient communities, and provides career skills and college scholarships for those who serve; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members celebrate 20 years of serving America through community service;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 12, 2014, as the 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICORPS in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
