2017 United Nations Day


WHEREAS, October 24, 1945, marks the founding of the United Nations and is observed each year as United Nations Day; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations promotes peace and security, development, democracy, economic prosperity, global health, and human rights around the world; and

WHEREAS, the effectiveness of the United Nations, depends on the participation of 193 member nations and millions of global citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Global Goals for Sustainable Development were unanimously adopted by all 193 member nations of the United Nations in 2015, creating a common set of voluntary priorities for action on combating poverty, promoting sustainable economic growth, and advancing human dignity worldwide; and

WHEREAS, the United States has a long tradition of international leadership and has shown bipartisan commitment to advancing the Global Goals at the local, state, and federal levels through important initiatives, such as coordinating with local leadership to combat human trafficking; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) has declared “Global Goals, Local Leaders” as its theme to recognize local efforts to champion one or more of the Global Goals for the 2017 United Nations Day commemoration; and

WHEREAS, the Pi Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to educating and mobilizing our local communities to build a stronger network of global citizens and leaders to create a more prosperous, safe, just, and sustainable world for all;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize October 24, 2017, as UNITED NATIONS DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
