2017 School Psychology Awareness Week


WHEREAS,all children should have access to an education that enables them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally; and

WHEREAS,children’s mental health and resilience are directly linked to their learning and development; and

WHEREAS, schools provide an opportunity to promote the good mental health of children because of the positive nature of the learning environment and the availability of trained, caring adults; and

WHEREAS,sound psychological principles are integral to instruction and learning, social and emotional development,prevention, early intervention and school safety, and supporting culturally-diverse student populations; and

WHEREAS,school psychologists are specially trained to deliver mental health services and academic support, both of which promote resilience, competence, and wellness in children; and 

WHEREAS,school psychologists facilitate collaboration between parents and educators to identify and reduce risk factors, promote protective factors, create effective, caring schools, increase access to resources for underserved communities, and implement research-driven prevention and intervention strategies; and

WHEREAS,school psychologists are trained to assess student and school-based barriers to learning as well as individual strengths, utilize data-based decision-making, implement research-driven prevention and intervention strategies, and evaluate outcomes and improve accountability; and

WHEREAS,Virginians recognize the vital role that school psychologists play in the personal and academic development of our children; and

WHEREAS, this year’s theme for School Psychology Awareness Week is “Power Up! Be a Positive Charge”;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize November 13-17, 2017, as the SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY AWARENESS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
