2017 National Truck Driver Appreciation Week


WHEREAS, more than 3.5 million professional truck drivers safely and securely deliver life’s essentials to homes, communities, schools, hospitals, and businesses all across America; and

WHEREAS, these hard-working men and women travel more than 421 billion miles delivering nearly 70 percent of total U.S. freight tonnage; and

WHEREAS, the trucking industry plays a critical role in Virginia’s economy by transporting 88 percent of the manufactured freight tonnage that moves in and out of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, professional truck drivers safely deliver more than 213,000tons of freight each day in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, more than 159,000 Virginians earn their living through employment in the trucking industry, including the more than 37,600 who work as professional heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers; and

WHEREAS, the trucking industry has made strides to lower hazardousemissions, by utilizing technological advances in their trucks; and

WHEREAS, during challenging times and natural disasters, professional truck drivers are among the first to respond, bringing critical goods to aid in recovery; and

WHEREAS, the people of the Commonwealth appreciate the commitment of each truck driver, and his and her hard work to help build a new Virginia economy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 10-16, 2017, as NATIONAL TRUCK DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
