2017 National Public Health Week

WHEREAS, public health works to prevent disease and promote good health within groups of people, from small communities to entire countries; and

WHEREAS, public health systems around the world and in the Commonwealth are committed to providing the services and expertise necessary to protect and improve public health; and

WHEREAS, a hallmark of Virginia’s public health system is extensive and effective collaboration among a wide range of public and private sector partners; and

WHEREAS, since 1908, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has created and supported strong public health systems that engage residents and community partners to foster a healthier Virginia; and

WHEREAS, VDH’s professionals and staff serve as guides for this system, helping communities throughout the Commonwealth to promote and protect the health of residents and visitors; and

WHEREAS, in April, the nation celebrates National Public Health Week to recognize the important role that health professionals play in sustaining and improving community health to create a brighter future; and

WHEREAS, VDH continues to educate and engage our residents and community partners in order to become the healthiest state in the nation, in keeping with the National Public Health Week theme, Healthiest Nation 2030;  and

WHEREAS, VDH is committed to ensuring that Virginia families are healthy from the start, and its collaborative efforts with individuals, communities, providers, and policy makers will help the Commonwealth’s next generation be healthier;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize April 3-9, 2017, as NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
