2017 National Beer Day


WHEREAS, the Cullen-Harrison Act went into effect on April 7, 1933, legalizing the purchase, sale and consumption of beer for the first time in 13 years; and

WHEREAS, the production of beer in Virginia stimulates economic growth by supporting manufacturing, tourism, and local farmers of grains, barley, and hops; and

WHEREAS, the beer industry in Virginia contributes an $8 billion economic impact and supports over 44,000 jobs in brewing, distribution, and retail businesses; and

WHEREAS, there are more than 190 licensed breweries in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, National Beer Day is an opportunity to celebrate responsibly the Commonwealth’s beer and the business and community leaders working to grow the industry; and

WHEREAS, National Beer Day was founded by a Richmond, Virginia, native, Justin Smith, in April of 2009; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is for Craft Beer Lovers;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize April 7, 2017, as NATIONAL BEER DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
