2017 Military Spouse Appreciation Day


WHEREAS, thousands of brave Americans demonstrate their courage and commitment to freedom by serving in the Armed Forces of the United States on Active Duty and in the National Guard and Reserves, and over half of these men and women are married; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth is home to nearly 70,000 military spouses who are strong, resilient, independent, brave, adaptable, supportive, patient, and loyal to both their family and country; and

WHEREAS, seventy-three percent of military spouses volunteer in local communities and organizations; and

WHEREAS, these spouses continue to make significant contributions to family, schools, communities, the Nation and our Commonwealth, despite prolonged and repeated absences of the service member; and

WHEREAS, military spouses often have to forgo their careers due to military transfers, therefore, the Commonwealth assists with unemployment compensation for those who have been forced to resign from their place of work due to their spouses relocation orders; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Virginia wish to recognize and honor military spouses, past and present, and pay tribute to the sacrifices these families make on a daily basis to guard our freedoms;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize May 12, 2017, as MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
