2017 Hunger Awareness Month


WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to combating hunger in every part of the state, and providing resources to Virginians in need; and

WHEREAS, the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, a partner state association of Feeding America, is Virginia’s largest hunger relief network; and

WHEREAS, each year, nearly 1.2 million Virginians rely on food provided by the members of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, such as the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Capital Area Food Bank, Feeding America Southwest Virginia, FeedMore, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, and Virginia Peninsula Foodbank; and

WHEREAS, in 2016, the members of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks distributed nearly 139 million pounds of food and grocery products through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community organizations; and

WHEREAS, food banks across the country, including the seven members of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, will host events during the month of September to increase awareness and encourage involvement in efforts to end hunger in local communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize September 2017 as HUNGER AWARENESS MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
