125th Anniversary of the General Federation of Women's Clubs


WHEREAS, founded in 1890, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is an international women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service; and

WHEREAS, GFWC has worked toward increasing food and drug regulation, led the drive for emergency relief support in times of crisis, developed kindergarten programs in public schools around the nation, and contributed to various other community programs; and

WHEREAS, in 2013, with nearly 90,000 members around the globe, GFWC members volunteered more than 4.5 million hours on nearly 100,000 projects, and donated more than $24 million in both monetary and in-kind donations; and

WHEREAS, the women of GFWC are role models to young girls in our Commonwealth and our nation, as they represent a continued vision for progress through volunteerism;

WHEREAS, The General Federation of Women’s Clubs celebrates its 125th Anniversary of inspiring and contributing to excellence in leadership and advocacy throughout the Commonwealth and the nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize April 24, 2015, as the 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
