100th Anniversary of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries

WHEREAS, in 2016, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries celebrates 100 years of conserving and managing the Commonwealth’s wildlife and natural resources, an important shared responsibility of current and future generations of Virginians; and

WHEREAS, more than 100 years ago, a group of dedicated sportsmen and conservationists proposed establishing a state wildlife agency to help restore fish and wildlife populations in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries was created by the Virginia General Assembly on June 17, 1916, and the department’s first office was established in the cloak room of the Senate Chamber in the Capitol; and

WHEREAS, funding for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is provided directly by Virginia’s hunters, trappers, anglers, boaters, and wildlife enthusiasts, and is used to coordinate the management of inland fisheries, wildlife, and recreational boating; and

WHEREAS, the wildlife management efforts and conservation programs of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries have benefited all citizens of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize June 17, 2016, as the 100TH   ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF GAME AND INLAND FISHERIES in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
